Ship/FX and Electronic Export Information (EEI)

Electronic export information, known as EEI, is information about a shipment that must be filed through the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE). According to the International Trade Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce:

The Electronic Export Information (EEI) is required documentation when the value of the commodity classified under each individual Schedule B number is over $2,500 or if a validated export license is required to export the commodity. The exporter is responsible for preparing the EEI and the carrier files it with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) through the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) and within that, AES Direct.

When is an EEI required?

Generally, EEI must be filed for goods of a certain value that are shipped from the U.S. to a foreign country, but there are exceptions you should be aware of.

You will need to file an EEI if the items you are shipping require an export license or if the value of the items as classified uner an individual Schedule B number is more than $2,500, and you are shipping between the following places:

  • For shipments originating from the U.S., Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands to any foreign country
  • For shipments being sent from the U.S. to Puerto Rico, or vice versa
  • For shipments being sent to the U.S. Virgin Islands from either the U.S. or Puerto Rico

EEI is NOT required in these instances:

  • If you are shipping items where the final destination is Canada and they do not require an export license or contain rough or uncut diamonds
  • Shipments to other U.S. possessions that are not Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands

Whether you choose to self-file your Electronic Export Information (EEI) or authorize FedEx Export AgentFile® or UPS to file on your behalf, Ship/FX allows you to update the status of a shipment’s EEI filing.
